Ontario Seniors’ Home Safety Tax Credit

The Ontario Government has introduced a new tax credit called the “Seniors’ Home Safety Tax Credit”.

It is refundable and available only for the 2021 tax year.

The intent of this credit is to support seniors who choose to stay in their homes. It provides a refundable tax credit for renovations made to their home to improve its safety and accessibility.

This refundable tax credit will help support Ontario seniors who are at least 65, by the end of the 2021 tax year, or the people who live with senior relatives. Expenses should be paid or become payable in the 2021 tax year.

Examples of some qualifying expenses:

  • Grab bars, and related reinforcements, for the toilet, bathtub, shower etc
  • Renovations to permit 1st-floor occupancy or a secondary suite for a senior
  • Stairlift
  • Wheelchair ramp
  • Non-slip flooring
  • Hands-free taps
  • Comfort high toilets
  • Door locks that are easy to operate
  • Automatic garage door openers etc

    The Seniors’ Home Safety Tax Credit is worth 25%, up to a maximum of $10,000 in eligible expenses for a senior’s principal residence in Ontario. The maximum credit is $2,500.

    Seniors can take advantage of this credit regardless of their income.

    How it works:

  • Add a wheelchair ramp to your house at the cost of $4,500; receive a refundable tax credit of $1,125
  • Add a wheel-in shower at the cost of $7,000; receive a refundable tax credit of $1,750
  • Add a stairlift to your home at the cost of $10,000; receive a refundable tax credit of $2,500
  • Add non-slip flooring at a cost of $12,000; receive a refundable tax credit of $2,500
