Auto-fill My Return

“Auto-fill” is a secure service offered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) which allows individuals and their authorized representatives to download relevant information pertaining to the individual’s income, benefits, savings/pension plans and carry forward amounts and fill in parts of their income tax and benefit return using certified software such as TaxTron. It is an excellent tool in eliminating human error while manually inputting slip information in your return.

Individuals:

In order for an individual to use the Auto-fill service, they must meet the following conditions:

  • be registered for My Account
  • Use a NETFILE-certified software
  • To auto-fill, most NETFILE-certified software in the market today automatically prompt the user to input their My Account user name and password in order to auto-fill. It is the responsibility of the individual (not the CRA!) to ascertain the completeness and accuracy of the data and whether or not they have been populated in the proper boxes before submitting the return to the CRA. It is important to mention that the auto-fill can only deliver the requested information available on the CRA database at the time the request was made. If the auto-fill information is incorrect or any slips are missing following an autofill, the individual must immediately contact their employer, financial institution or any other payee. If an individual is preparing a return on behalf of friend or relative, the individual will need to be authorised by the friend or the family member in order to use the auto-fill on their behalf. To gain authorisation the friend or the family member will need a RepID through CRA’s “Represent a Client” portal. Once the individual has been authorised through the portal, they can access the friend or family’s tax information and auto-fill their returns for the current or previous 6 years.

    Authorized representatives:

If an entity intends to file returns on behalf of their clients, they must meet the following eligibility requirements (source: Canada.ca):

  • be a registered electronic filer
  • be registered in Represent a Client and have a RepID, GroupID, or Business Number (BN)
  • be authorized for online access with the CRA, by completing an E-authorization web submission for Authorizing or Cancelling a Representative (in the Represent a Client portal or in the EFILE-certified software), with Level 1 (or higher) authorization
  • use an EFILE-certified software
